Social media activist VeryDarkMan has reignited public debate over Nigeria's security architecture, accusing the military of inconsistency in its response to attacks involving its own personnel.
In a video posted to his Instagram page, the commentator drew a sharp contrast between past and present military responses to insecurity, recalling how communities were once subjected to sweeping reprisals whenever soldiers came under attack — regardless of whether residents were directly involved.
"Whether you're among them or not, they will beat you," he said, referencing what he described as collective punishment historically meted out to communities linked to attacks on the Nigerian Army.
Turning his attention to recent events, the activist questioned the military's apparent inaction following the abduction of a senior army general and his wife by bandits, expressing dismay that the location where the general was allegedly held in captivity had reportedly not been raided by security forces.
According to VeryDarkMan, the general was held in the bush until his death, after which his remains were returned to his community, while his wife was later released by the captors. He alleged that, despite the tragic outcome, the military has yet to launch any operation against the location where the general was reportedly detained.
The commentator further raised concerns about the management of security funding in the country, suggesting that lapses in accountability and resource allocation may be contributing to the persistence of banditry and kidnapping nationwide.
His remarks have triggered widespread discussion across social media platforms, with many Nigerians weighing in on questions of military accountability, transparency in security operations, and the need for a more decisive response to the escalating wave of insecurity across the country.
