The Nigerian Army has taken one of its own personnel into custody following an accidental shooting incident that left a fellow soldier wounded at a military formation in Borno State.
The development was disclosed by security analyst Zagazola Makama in a post shared on X, citing military sources familiar with the incident, which occurred at approximately 6:00 a.m. on June 20 at Sierra 7, a defensive position located in the Damboa Local Government Area of the state.
According to the sources, the soldier involved, attached to the Army's 25 Brigade, negligently discharged his weapon while stationed within the military formation, resulting in a gunshot injury to a colleague present at the location.
Following the incident, the injured soldier received immediate first aid before being evacuated to a field ambulance facility for further medical treatment.
Military authorities confirmed that the soldier responsible for the discharge was promptly disarmed and taken into custody shortly after the incident, and he remains in detention pending the outcome of investigations and any disciplinary measures that may follow.
The Army used the incident to reiterate the importance of strict adherence to weapons-handling procedures and established safety protocols among personnel operating in the field, stressing that such measures remain vital to safeguarding troops and preventing avoidable accidents during military operations.
