Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been returned for a second term as governor of Ekiti State after recording a resounding victory in Saturday’s governorship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially announced the result on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti, declaring Oyebanji winner after he dominated the poll across all 16 local government areas of the state.
According to the final figures released by the electoral body, Oyebanji secured 319,224 votes, far ahead of his closest challenger, Wole Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 40,543 votes. Oluwadare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) finished in third place with 12,872 votes.
The APC candidate achieved a clean sweep of the election, winning in every local government area and maintaining strong support in both urban centres and rural communities.
Announcing the outcome, INEC’s State Collation Officer confirmed that Oyebanji satisfied all constitutional requirements and was therefore duly elected governor of Ekiti State.
The commission disclosed that 384,940 voters were accredited for the election out of the state’s 988,251 registered voters. A total of 382,109 votes were cast, while 6,332 ballots were declared invalid.
Results from other political parties showed the ADC polling 12,872 votes, while the ADP received 1,269 votes. Other parties recorded lower figures, including A with 564 votes, AA with 126, AAC with 195, APM with 59, APP with 61, LP with 276, NNPP with 35, PRP with 163, SDP with 179, YPP with 98 and ZLP with 113 votes.
The victory guarantees Oyebanji another four years in office and further strengthens the APC’s political dominance in Ekiti State. It also places him among the select group of governors who have successfully won re-election in the state’s democratic history.
