The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has taken into custody two elderly men, aged 84 and 75, over allegations of supplying illicit substances to teenage secondary school students in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
Identified as Godfrey Orji, 84, and Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, 75, both men now face scrutiny following separate arrests linked to drug trafficking activities targeting young students within the area.
According to NDLEA operatives, Obiora was apprehended on Friday, June 19, 2026, after credible intelligence pointed to his alleged involvement in selling illicit substances to students and other residents from his patent medicine store located on Club Road, Umuahia. A search of the premises reportedly led to the recovery of 4.64 kilograms of opioid substances, including tramadol and diazepam.
In a separate but related case, Orji, a pensioner, was caught by security personnel at Saint Silas Secondary School in Old Umuahia, where he allegedly supplied illicit drugs to two teenage students. Following his apprehension by school guards, he was handed over to police authorities, who subsequently transferred him to NDLEA custody on Thursday, June 18.
NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi disclosed that one of the affected students, a 15-year-old in SS2, confessed that the elderly grandfather had been supplying him with the drugs, which he admitted to both consuming personally and reselling to fellow students.
Babafemi confirmed that both elderly suspects are expected to appear in court to answer to the allegations, while the affected students have been enrolled in counselling and rehabilitation programmes to support their recovery.
The arrests form part of ongoing efforts by the NDLEA to clamp down on drug trafficking networks targeting young people within educational institutions across the country.
