The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed widely circulated reports claiming that two kidnap victims abducted in Igbope have regained their freedom, insisting that both remain in the custody of their captors.
The clarification follows online reports suggesting that Mrs Kuburat Omowumi and her son, who were seized days earlier, had been freed following an ultimatum reportedly issued to suspected Fulani herdsmen by Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.
A video circulating on social media on Sunday had claimed the duo were released as a direct result of Igboho's intervention, sparking widespread celebration and discussion online.
However, the Command's Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, moved swiftly to set the record straight, describing the viral claims as entirely false and misleading.
In an official statement, Ayanlade confirmed that police are aware of the video and similar content suggesting the victims — abducted on June 16, 2026 — had been rescued, but stressed that no such release has taken place.
He urged members of the public to exercise caution and verify information through credible sources before circulating unconfirmed claims, warning that misinformation could complicate ongoing rescue efforts.
According to the police spokesperson, the Command remains actively engaged in operations aimed at securing the safe release of Mrs Omowumi and her son, with investigations and rescue efforts said to be ongoing.
The statement did not provide a timeline for the victims' anticipated release, but reassured residents that the command is committed to resolving the case.
