Veteran Nollywood comic legend Nkem Owoh, beloved across Africa by his screen name "Osuofia," has lifted the curtain on the surprising origins of one of Nigeria's most celebrated acting careers, revealing that he never set out to be an actor and that his decades-long career in front of the camera was entirely unplanned.
Speaking during an appearance on the Selah Meditate podcast, the iconic funnyman disclosed that his original ambition was a quiet life behind the scenes as a scriptwriter — until the people around him noticed something in him that he had not quite noticed in himself.
"My coming in front of the camera was an accident. I was a scriptwriter behind the scenes and people started telling me to start performing in front of the camera," he revealed.
The turning point, he explained, came when he was offered a brief stand-up comedy slot that would change the entire trajectory of his life.
Quote
"They created a 7-minute programme for me to do stand-up comedy in the 80s. I came in front of the camera and saw that what I was doing, people were buying it, and that was how my acting career began,"
Osuofia recounted. He credited the persistent encouragement of colleagues who were convinced his comic genius was better expressed on screen than on paper for nudging him toward a path that would eventually make him a household name across the continent.
Beyond the nostalgia, the actor also offered a sobering reflection on the true cost of fame, noting that celebrity life — for all its glitter and public adulation — quietly strips its bearers of something deeply personal: their freedom. He observed that while admirers tend to see only the glamorous surface of stardom, those living it understand all too well the invisible limitations it imposes on everyday life.
