A Nigerian woman has become the subject of widespread social media discussion after sharing a detailed account of the meals she enjoyed at the funeral of late actor Alexx Ekubo, held in Arochukwu, Abia State, on Thursday, June 18.
In a video circulating online, the lady addressed critics who took issue with guests eating at the burial ceremony, firing back at those questioning the appropriateness of dining at the event. She challenged detractors directly, suggesting that anyone opposed to eating at funerals should simply decline food if offered in future.
Detailing her culinary experience at the reception, she listed an extensive spread that included small chops, goat meat pepper soup, jollof rice paired with Chinese-style sauce, Singapore noodles, and the traditional delicacy African salad, popularly known as Abacha. She rounded off her account by mentioning a final serving of boiled corn and beans enjoyed later in the celebration.
The lady further revealed that festivities continued well beyond the meal, with attendees dancing and celebrating what she described as the well-lived life of the actor, who passed away at age 40.
Defending the celebratory nature of the funeral, she pushed back against criticism questioning the lavishness of the burial and the decision to serve food to guests, arguing that those who travelled long distances — some by flight — deserved proper hospitality rather than returning home hungry.
She insisted that enjoying a meal at the event was not a sign of disrespect toward the deceased, stressing that honouring his memory through celebration aligned with the spirit of who Ekubo was known to be in life — a vibrant personality who embodied joy and the love of good living.
According to her, those who personally knew the actor would attest that such a celebratory send-off was exactly the kind of tribute he would have wanted, given his reputation as someone who brought life and energy to every gathering.
