The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has triggered a major crisis in Kano State after replacing several candidates submitted by the Kwankwasiyya faction, prompting strong indications that former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso may exit the party.

According to a report by DailyPost, the NDC effected the changes citing a breach of a pre-existing power-sharing agreement between the original party structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc.

A document signed by Kano State NDC Chairman, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, outlined the revisions to align with the agreed 60-40 formula for sharing elective tickets and party positions.

The document, which was copied to National Leader Senator Seriake Dickson, Kwankwasiyya leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman, stressed that the original party structure would retain 40% while the Kwankwasiyya bloc gets 60%.

Revised Federal Constituency Candidates

The party approved the following candidates for Federal Constituencies under the new list:

Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani – Kumbotso

Nasiru Ali Ahmed – Nassarawa

Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id – Kano Municipal

Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim – Doguwa/Tudun Wada

Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar – Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa

Ibrahim Bashir Bango – Sumaila/Takai

Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata – Gwale

Adjustments were also made to State House of Assembly tickets in Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.Party sources say the NDC leadership is standing firm on the 60/40 sharing arrangement, describing it as a standing agreement that must be respected.

However, the decision has reportedly angered the Kwankwasiyya movement, with indications that Kwankwaso has threatened to pull out of the NDC if the party proceeds with the replacement of his preferred candidates.

The development has heightened tensions within the relatively new party ahead of the elections, as it struggles to manage the integration of the powerful Kwankwasiyya bloc.
