The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has urged Muslims in Nigeria to observe the crescent of Sha’aban 1445AH after sunset on Saturday, 29th Rajab, 1445AH (February 10, 2024), in preparation for this year’s Ramadan fasting.
Speaking on behalf of the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, Professor Salisu Shehu, the Deputy Secretary-General of the NSCIA, issued the directive in a statement.
He explained that scientifically, the anticipated time for the moon’s conjunction is on Friday, February 9, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.
Shehu emphasised the significance of understanding that the moon typically becomes visible sometime after the conjunction occurs, despite various environmental factors that may affect visibility.
This announcement serves as a reminder that Sha’aban, the eighth lunar calendar month, indicates that Ramadan (the ninth lunar month) is approximately one month away, highlighting the approaching period of fasting and spiritual reflection for Muslims.
