The Grammy Awards has added five new categories, including one to celebrate video game music.

As reporter by Eurogamer, the "Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media" award lacks a catchy name but aims to recognise excellence in music made specifically made for video games.

Viable candidates include "score soundtrack albums comprised predominately of original scores and created specifically for, or as a companion to, a current video game or other interactive media released within the qualification period."

A handful of other categories were also added to the Grammy Awards - Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical, Best Alternative Music Performance, Best Americana Performanc e, and Best Spoken Word Poet - which will come into effect starting in 2023.

It comes during a wider wave of mainstream acknowledgement of video game music. The BBC Proms, for example, an annual series of classical music concerts, will include video game for the first time when it takes place this August.

Orchestral composer Alex Moukala has also been sharing a ton of video game covers lately including 15 different styles of the Elden Ring soundtrack and a 30-person Wii jam session that took the internet by storm.

IGN also has its own video game music of the year award, and last year we gave it to Marvel 's Guardians of the Galaxy. "When we talk about video game music, we're usually referring to an original score, or maybe a selection of licensed tracks," we said. "Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy triumphs in both those departments, but it goes a step further."

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelancer who occasionally remembers to tweet @thelastdinsdale. He'll talk about The Witcher all day.
